What exactly does the word "organic" mean?

When you buy food labeled "organic," you can be sure that it was produced using the highest organic production and handling standards in the world. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Organic Program, organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations.

When you buy Vermont Organics Organic Infant Formula -- either our milk organic infant formula or our soy organic infant formula -- you are supporting environmental health while feeding your little one complete nutrition that is produced without potentially harmful pesticides. In the case of our milk organic infant formula, your baby's formula is produced from cow's that are not given antibiotics or added growth hormones.

Before a baby formula can be labeled "organic," a federal government-approved certifier inspects the farm where the food is grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules necessary to meet USDA organic standards. Vermont Organics is approved by QAI to manufacture organic powder infant formula that is compliant with the comprehensive USDA organic regulations.

What makes organic products different from non-organic products?

The USDA National Organic Program makes sure that all products bearing the USDA organic label originate from farms or handling operations that are certified-organic by a program-approved state or private organization.

  • Program regulations prohibit the use of the following in organic food production and handling: genetic engineering, ionizing radiation, and sewage sludge.
  • Crops meet organic standards if they are raised without most potentially harmful pesticides, petroleum-based fertilizers, and sewage sludge-based fertilizers.
  • Livestock must be fed organic feed, raised with direct access to the outdoors, and raised free of antibiotics and growth hormones.
